Tim's 2014 Emmy Picks

It's Emmy time folks, and you know what that means. It's time for Tim's annual Emmy picks. Tim's picks have become a tradition during award season and something we know all of you have come to expect and love.

Late Night host and former SNL alum Seth Meyers is back and hosting this years ceremony.

There are so many great actors, actresses and shows that have been nominated this year. Every one of them deserve to win this prestigious television award. With this years Emmy's we will give a final farewell to some shows, such as Breaking Bad. We also see a bunch of new shows that really made a punch this year such as HBO's True Detective. Game of Thrones leads the pack with the most nominations coming in at 59 nominations, but will they take them all? 

We can't wait for the show tonight. The Emmy Awards have a ton of categories and as usual Tim will only be picking the main categories. Without further adieu, here are Tim's picks for the 2014 Emmy Awards. 

Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

Aaron Paul - Breaking Bad

Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

Anna Gunn - Breaking Bad

*This is an incredibly tough category to pick from with so many great performances from Christina Hendricks in Mad Men and Lena Heady in Game of Thrones. This year I feel like Anna Gunn has captured this outright with a phenomenal performance in the Final Season of Breaking Bad. 

Lead Actor in a Drama Series

Bryan Cranston - Breaking Bad

* I think most fans would agree that this award will go to Bryan Cranston for his final performance of Walter White, but let's not count out Matthew McConaughey's incredible performance in True Detective. Really everybody in this category, Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Jeff Daniels, and Woody Harrelson, are all more than deserving on the Emmy in this category, but I truly think Bryan Cranston will be sent off with a final Emmy for Breaking Bad. 

Lead Actress in a Drama Series

Robin Wright - House of Cards

*Another powerhouse category. I really feel that Robin Wright will win this year, but don't count out Lizzy Caplan for Masters of Sex or Kerry Washington for Scandal. Both of these women were amazing in their roles. 

Guest Actress in a Drama Series

Jane Fonda - The Newsroom 

*Don't count our Kate Mara for her role in House of Cards. She has been great in House of Cards from the start and I think she's Jane Fonda's main competition. 

Guest Actor in a Drama Series

Dylan Baker - The Good Wife

Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series

"Felina" - Breaking Bad

*Don't count out the Breaking Bad episode "Ozymandias". Both of these episodes were amazing and wrapped up the series beautifully. However, I can't think of a better finale than Breaking Bad's.

Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series

Vince Gilligan for "Felina" - Breaking Bad

*The only other possibility I really see for this category is Cary Joji Fukunaga for the episode "Who Goes There" from True Detective.

Andre Braugher - Brooklyn Nine-Nine

*Such a great lineup of actors here. I would love to see any one of these guys win. I really wouldn't mind to see Tony Hale win again for Veep, but I really think we will see Andre Braugher take home his first win for Brooklyn Nine-Nine. This wouldn't be his first Emmy win either since he took one home for the hit drama, Homicide.

Mayim Bialik - The Big Bang Theory

*Year after year, Mayim Bialik's knocks it out of the park with her character Amy on The Big Bang Theory. I pick her every year and this year is no different. I won't be surprised to see Kate Mulgrew win for "Orange Is The New Black"though. I must say I am thrilled to see SNL cast member Kate McKinnon get a nomination as well.

Jim Parsons - The Big Bang Theory

*A lot of good performances this year, but not as strong as a category as previous years. Jim Parson will add another Emmy to his collection this year. 

Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

Julia Louis-Dreyfus - Veep

*What an incredible lineup of actresses here! If Julia Louis-Dreyfus was is not to win this, I feel like her main competition is Edie Falco for Nurse Jackie and Taylor Schilling for Orange Is The New Black. Both are incredible in their roles but I think Julia Louis-Dreyfus wins again!

Uzo Aduba - Orange Is The New Black

Jimmy Fallon - Saturday Night Live

*This was easily my favorite episode of SNL all of last season. Fallon is a lock for his Emmy win!

Louis C.K. for "So Did The Fat Lady" - Louie

*Even though I don't see it winning, I am glad to see that Silicon Valley received an Emmy nomination in it's first year!

Outstanding Directing For A Comedy Series

Jodie Foster for "Lesbian Request Denied" - Orange Is The New Black

*The only other episode I really see this going to is Mike Judge for "Minimum Viable Product" for Silicon Valley.

Outstanding Comedy Series

The Big Bang Theory

*Well that just took me 20 minutes to type that. What a tough race for the best comedies on TV right now. I'm still not even 100% confident in my pick, but that's what I am going with. The other one that I am really torn between is Orange Is The New Black. The Big Bang Theory really seemed to step their game up their year. I think this Emmy goes to them. However, Orange Is The New Black has also become a powerhouse show. Modern Family is still one of the best comedies on TV, but I think this year just isn't their year. Louie, Veep and Silicon Valley are also amazing shows, but I just don't see them taking this one.

The Colbert Report

*This could really go either way. I could really see The Daily Show or The Tonight Show getting this Emmy, but Colbert and his team of writers continue to step up their game. Even after winning the Emmy last year, The Colbert Nation hasn't slowed down a bit. 

Outstanding Variety-Series

The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon

*While this category has previously been ruled by The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, Fallon has brought a whole new element to Late Night TV as he took over The Tonight Show. Fallon deserves this win!

Outstanding Animated Program

Bob's Burgers

I finally started watching Bob's Burgers back in the Fall. This show has quickly become one of my favorite shows on television. I think Bob's Burgers wins without a doubt.

10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About The Marvel Universe

Since Marvel was founded in 1939, fans around the world have followed their favorite Super Heroes and Super Villains with intensity and admiration. However, with over 9,000 characters in the Marvel Universe, there are countless stories and facts that even the biggest Marvel fan may not have known existed. These were some of my favorite facts that many fans may not know about the vast Marvel Universe.

1 – The newly beloved Guardians of the Galaxy character, Rocket Raccoon was inspired by The Beatles song “Rocky Raccoon”. Rocket first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #271 where The Hulk and Rocket try to stop a villain from stealing Gideon’s Bible.       

                                                                                                                             

2 – The King of Pop, Michael Jackson attempted to buy Marvel in the early 90’s so that he could play Spider-Man in a movie he planned to have produced. I always thought a little web-slinging action was exactly what Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker film was missing!

3- In 2007 The Simpsons introduced us to the beloved character of Spider-Pig. But were The Simpsons the creators of Spider-Pig? If you answered yes to that question, think again, it was Marvel! Marvel actually created the character of Peter-Porker in the 1983 comic about your friendly neighborhood Spider-Ham.

4- Have you ever wondered if your pet may have super powers?  For all you know your pet frog could actually have the powers of Thor. Don’t worry you aren’t losing your mind thinking this way. Well, not yet anyway. In 2009 Marvel created a superhero group of Pet Avengers. The character known as Throg is a Frog with the powers of Thor.

5 – In 2009, Rapper Eminem became a character in the Marvel Universe where he appeared in the comics with Punisher. In 2013, Eminem was also featured on an alternate cover of Marvel’s Mighty Avengers #3 with Iron Man.

6- You may have partied hard last weekend, but Squirrel Girl wasn’t just a figment of your imagination. Squirrel Girl first appeared in Marvel’s Marvel Super-Heroes in 1992. Squirrel Girl has an incredible ability of being able to control squirrels to help her fight the strongest of Super Villains. Squirrel Girl once defeated Doctor Doom by filling his airplane with a swarm of angry squirrels. This further confirms my theories about our cute little woodland friends. No matter how cute they may be, never trust a squirrel.

7- Marvel killed President Nixon! While several U.S. Presidents have been in Marvel Comics, none of them have ever been killed off. In Captain America #175, which was published shortly before Nixon resigned from Office, Captain is trying to track down Government corruption. This leads him to the White House where he ultimately sees the President commit suicide.

8- Iron Man’s artificial intelligence, J.A.R.V.I.S, was once a human! In the Iron Man films we are just use to hearing J.A.R.V.I.S through Tony Starks command center, but in the Iron Man comics his name was Edwin Jarvis, and he was actually Tony Starks butler.

9- The Guardians of the Galaxy made their first Marvel appearance in 1969 in Marvel Super Heroes #18, but it took them 20 years to actually have their own comic. When it was published in 1990, the comic wasn’t popular and was cancelled after 62 issues. 

10- Who is Stan Lee’s favorite Super Hero? Many people believe that it’s Spider-Man. While Stan Lee has always had a fondness for Spider-Man, he’s not his favorite.  In the 2013 documentary “Superheroes”, Stan Lee states “When I was writing each one, that was my favorite at the moment. I’ve spent so much time working on them that I’ve never really had time to think who my favorite is. They’re all like my children anyway. I think I love them equally”.
