Simple Plan gets a documentary on Amazon Prime

The Candian Pop Punk Band Simple Plan is getting a documentary this summer on Amazon Prime!

For as long as I can remember, Simple Plan has been a part of my regular rotation. From the first time I listened to the album, "No Pads, No Helmets, Just Balls" I was hooked. I've seen these guys live countless times over the years, and they have never let me down. Back in 2003, Seb even gave one of my old shitty bands the advice to get out of Utah if we seriously wanted a record deal. Needless to say, we didn't listen. Honestly, looking back on it, I received that advice a lot... I'm really glad I finally took that to heart years ago.

Now while this is their first official documentary, I will never forget the impact that their CD/DVD combo of "A Big Package for You" had on me. I was early in my days of trying to be in a band, and seeing all of their BTS footage of being on the road and touring just made me eager to play live music on the road. While that dream was short lived, following Simple Plan never stopped. I am very excited to see so much of their story unfold in the trailer that I never knew and can't wait to see more.

Check out the trailer below and stream Simple Plan: The Kids in the Crowd on July 8th!

JAWS 50th Anniversary Documentary Coming July 10th!

Steven Spielberg's iconic film, JAWS celebrates its 50th Anniversary today!

It's honestly crazy to me that this iconic film has been around for half a century. JAWS is one of the many movies that inspired me and so many others to become filmmakers. I remember seeing this film for the first time and just being mesmerized. As I got older and started becoming more and more interested in film, learning everything I could about this movie and the hell that Spielberg went through to make it happen became an investment for me. I was awestruck the more I learned about how so much went wrong, especially with Bruce, and yet they still made the masterpiece they did really spoke to me. There was such a purity to the fact that no matter what was thrown at them, they were going to tell this story and tell it well.

This famed picture of Spielberg in the mouth of Bruce has always been one of my favorite BTS shots.

To celebrate JAWS turning 50, National Geographic is releasing a documentary called JAWS @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story. This will air on National Geographic Thursday July 10th, and stream the following day on Disney+ and Hulu. I am incredibly excited about this documentary and can't wait to see even more behind the scenes bits from JAWS.

I first came across the Berkowtiz Brothers almost a year ago when I briefly met them at a signing for their comic book, "The Writer". I'll be honest, I wasn't at the signing for them, but for another comic and decided to pick theirs up while I was there. As soon as I dove in, I was hooked!

I talked with Max and Ben about growing up on the East Coast, their first introduction to comic books, getting involved with entertainment, earliest influences and the first comics they bought, developing "The Writer" and bringing Josh Gadd on board, pitching to Dark Horse Comics, their social marketing company Not a Billionaire, and so much more!

Amy and Steven

On January 1, 2024 the beloved Steamboat Willie became public domain, and Steven and Amy knew exactly what they were going to do when the clock struck midnight, turn it into a horror film! I was shocked at just how fast this was announced after the property became public, but Steve and Amy already had a plan in the works! After watching the movie this past week, I can say firsthand, it paid off.

I talked with Steven and Amy about how they managed to turn the film around so quickly, finding the balance between being true to the Willie character while also making him a killing maniac, bringing Amy's character in the film to life, the hidden Disney homages, favorite scenes to film, and so much more!

Tim's 97th Oscar Picks

It's that time of year again! The red carpet is rolled out and the Oscars are here! Which can only mean one thing, it's time for my annual Oscar Picks!

Conan O'Brien is hosting for the first time, and I could not be more excited!

This year's nominees are one of a kind and I had pleasure as always speaking with a number of them. "Anora" has been quite the powerhouse this award season, and I expect that to continue tonight. Last week's SAG Awards shook some things up with Conclave winning for ensemble and Timothee Chalamet winning best actor. Some of these races are so tight that I may as well have just flipped a coin to decide them.  All three of the short film categories are as tight as I've ever seen them. Of course the shorts program holds a special place in my heart as I talk with almost all of these filmmakers every year and I honestly feel bad about picking any one of them. But it's my job to do so!

Without further ado, here's my picks for the 97th Oscars.

BEST PICTURE

Anora

BEST ACTOR

Timothee Chalamet

I'm picking Chalamet as an upset. I have fully expected this to go to Adrian Brody all award season, but after Chalamet's SAG win, it really shook things up. While Brody has won pretty much every major award, SAG members represents one of the largest voting bodies which is why the SAG Awards typically predicts the winner. While it's not perfect, sometimes the BAFTA winner is who takes it, statistically speaking, the majority of times it goes to the SAG winner.

BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Kieran Culkin

BEST ACTRESS

Demi Moore

While Moore feels like the heavy favorite here, we can't ignore Mikey Madison for "Anora" as she's had a little bit of resurgence in the award landscape and could easily sneak in with a win. This has been a huge year though for Demi Moore and I fully expect her to win.

BEST ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Zoe Saldana

BEST DIRECTOR

Sean Baker

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

The Brutalist

BEST ANIMATED FILM

The Wild Robot

I really wouldn't be surprised to see "Flow" sneak in here with a win, but I think this is a lock for "The Wild Robot".

BEST EDITING

Conclave

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

Anora

As much as I love Anora ,and they won the WGA award here, I would love to see an upset by "A Real Pain" here. I loved that movie and think Jessie Eisenberg not only wrote a brilliant script, but is also very beloved by the industry and many people would love to see him win an Oscar. I still think it's going to go to "Anora", but I'd love to see this particular upset here.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Conclave

While "Nickel Boys" did with the WGA Award here, "Conclave" was not eligible for the WGA Awards, making this race a little different. Nothing against "Nickel Boys" as it is a beautiful and well written film, but I think had "Conclave" been eligible for the WGA we would have seen it go to them.

BEST DOCUMENTARY

Porcelain War

Another one that I feel could go two ways. I think "No Other Land" is a good contender in here, however, it feels little bleak and heavy, where as "Porcelain War" comes from a bleak setting offering hope. I think this will give it the edge.

BEST ANIMATED SHORT

Magic Candies

One of the hardest categories to select. I could see any one of these winning. "Magic Candies" was the one that spoke to me the most, but I could also really see "Yuck!" coming in here with a potential win. We of course had "Yuck!" filmmaker Loic Espuche on the show last week and would love to see him win. "Wander to Wonder" also won the BAFTA. I think this is anybodies race.

BEST LIVE ACTION SHORT

Anuja

Another insanely difficult category to pick. This one is such a toss up. "A Lien" is very of the moment, and frankly broke me while watching it. "The Last Ranger" is also such a beautiful film that I could really see sneak in a win here.

BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT

I Am Ready, Warden

Another short that absolutely broke me, but it wasn't the only in the category that destroyed me. "Incident" is another top contender that is so of the moment and will just break your heart. I think "I Am Ready, Warden" has the upper hand by it being more narrative, but I cannot suggest "Incident" more. It's an incredibly important film.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

Wicked

BEST HAIR AND MAKEUP

The Substance

BEST INTERNATIONAL FEATURE

"I'm Still Here"

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

The Brutalist

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

The Journey, The Six Triple Eight

This makes Diane Warrens 16th Oscar nomination without a win. I think the legend takes it home tonight. I know a lot are picking one of the songs from Emelia Perez here, but I think that vote will be split and Warren finally gets her Oscar gold!

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN

Wicked

Don't count out "The Brutalist" here. The stunning simplicity of "The Brutalist" gave it such powerful production design but I think the loud powerful design of "Wicked" will over power the powerful simplicity here.

BEST SOUND

Dune: Part Two

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

Dune: Part Two

Don't miss the 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O'Brien on ABC and streaming on Hulu. This year's show starts an hour earlier at 4PM PST.

LISTEN TO THE EPISODE ON SPOTIFY HERE

On today's episode I have the founder of SHORTS and presenter of the Oscar Nominated Short Films program, Carter Pilcher!

Carter Pilcher

SHORTS is celebrating their 20th Anniversary this year, and prior to SHORTS presenting the Oscar nominated short film screenings, there was no way for the general public to view the nominated short films. Since the series was launched, it has become a massive hit, selling out theaters across the country before the nominees are even announced.

On top of celebrating 20 years of SHORTS, I also had Carter on the show to talk about an issue at hand as two of the nominated filmmakers are currently not allowed to travel to the US for the ceremony due to the fact that they are from Iran. Hossein Molayemi and Shirin Sohani, the filmmakers behind "In the Shadow of the Cypress" have struggled to obtain Visas from the State Department.

I talked with Carter about how SHORTS came about, the demand around the world for the program, the impact short films have on the viewing communities, and how all of us can try and help make it possible for Hossein and Shirin from "In the Shadow of the Cypress" to attend the Oscars and celebrate their incredible achievement.

A huge Thank You to Carter for taking the time to join me. Please follow SHORTS on all of the links below, and most importantly, please click on the links below to contact your Congressional representatives and Senators and encourage them to allow the Hossein and Shirin to attend the ceremony.

Thank You, Carter!

On today's episode I have Oscar nominated filmmaker, Loïc Espuche!

Loïc Espuche

Loïc's animated short film "YUCK!" is nominated in this year's Academy Awards. This is such a sweet film following a group of kids on vacation seeing all of the adults around them showing affection and kissing. Of course, kissing is gross to kids, so they all squirm and of course exclaim, "YUCK!".

I talked with Loïc about how the film came about, how he got into animation, what inspired the film, working with his girlfriend who produced the film, find the work relationship balance, the unique animation styles to the film, attending the Oscars, and so much more.
