Episode 92 - LIVE from the Sundance Film Festival (Part 2)

LISTEN TO THE EPISODE ON ITUNES HERE

[NSFW WARNING: EXPLICIT CONTENT]

On today's episode we are coming to you once again LIVE from the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

Early morning at the Egyptian Theater

Today's episode is Part 2 of our Sundance coverage where I am joined by Jesse Knight, as well as Christopher James and Quinci Staker from the "In Movie Nerds We Trust" Podcast to talk about all of the films that we have had the chance of screening during the festival.

Tim and Jesse with the cast of "Crown Heights"

Tim and Lakeith Stanfield talking after the "Crown Heights" interview

Tim and Jesse with the cast of the web series "Snatchers".

All of use watched so many films during the festival. Between the 4 of us, over 30 films were screened! We had so many favorites of the festival, my personal favorite being "The Big Sick". We also talked about the new documentary "Cries From Syria" that was recently acquired by HBO and is very relevant to what is happening within our country now.

Tim and Jesse with the cast of "Fucking Bunnies".

Tim and Jesse with Director Pete Gleeson of "Hotel Coolgardie"

Some of the many films we talked about were "Crown Heights", "The Incredible Jessica James", "Mudbound", "Dave Made A Maze", "What Lies Upstream", "Cortez", "Killing Ground", "Suck It Up", "Dim The Fluorescents", "Future '38", "Fucking Bunnies", and so many more. I can say we enjoyed a lot more than usual this year, which made a lot of these films really fun.

Tim and Jesse with the cast of the Slamdance film, "Withdrawn"

A big Thank You to the Sundance Film Festival for allowing us to cover the festival once again this year. We had such an incredible time at the festival, despite the snows best attempts to make it miserable. Make sure to keep your eyes open for so many of these great independent films as they release on HBO, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and of course in theater throughout the year. You aren't going to want to miss out these films. Thank you as well to Christopher, Quinci and Jesse for spending the last week freezing at watching these Sundance films.

See you next year, Park City!

Enjoy the episode!

Tim's 23rd Annual SAG Award Picks

The 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards take place TONIGHT at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles!

This year's SAG Awards is an incredibly tight race with so many incredible nominees. We saw a few surprise wins during the Golden Globes a few weeks ago and don't be surprised if the SAG Awards through us some curveballs as well. Tonight's winners should give us some insight into the upcoming Oscar race as well. Don't miss tonights show on TNT & TBS! Here are my picks for the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
Ryan Gosling, “La La Land”

Don't be surprised to see Casey Affleck slide in and grab this award for "Manchester by the Sea". I think it's a tight race between Gosling and Affleck. "La La Land" goes into the SAG awards with a lot of momentum after their Golden Globe wins and record tying Oscar nominations, and I think this momentum keeps going with a Gosling win.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
Emma Stone, “La La Land”

Another incredibly tight race that really comes down to Amy Adams and Emma Stone in my opinion. Some thing that Portman has some ground her for her role in "Jackie", but I don't feel that her performance will shake either of these two. If Adams is to win, it definitely will shake up some Oscar picks as the "Arrival" star was snubbed for the nomination.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
Mahershala Ali, “Moonlight”

I still don't know how Mahershala didn't win the Golden Globe in this category. Look for them to take home the SAG tonight.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
Viola Davis, “Fences”

No comment needed. Viola Davis FTW!
Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
“Moonlight”

What a category! Every film in this category has such incredible cast performances that it is truly hard to pick a clear front runner. Moonlight seems to be the clear pick to me, but don't be surprised to see "Fences" or "Hidden Figures" even step in to take this award.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries
Courtney B. Vance, “The People v. O.J. Simpson”
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries
Sarah Paulson, “The People v. O.J. Simpson”
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series
John Lithgow, “The Crown”
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series
Claire Foy, “The Crown”

Wow. This category is about as stacked as they come. Every actress in the category had incredible performances this year. That being said, the only person I see that could take this away from Claire Foy is Millie Bobbie Brown. The young actress is one of the breakout stars this year with the hit "Stranger Things", but I don't think SAG voters will be swayed enough to ignore Claire Foy's performance as the Queen.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series
Jeffrey Tambor, “Transparent”
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep”
I wouldn't be surprised to see Uzo Aduba sneak in with a repeat win for "Orange is the New Black", but I think we will see Julia Louis-Dreyfus finally take this home.
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series
“Game of Thrones”

The only show I see that could possibly take this from "Game of Thrones" will be "The Crown". I don't care if this is Downton Abbey's final season, it just wasn't as good as "Game of Thrones" or "The Crown".
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series
“Veep”

I was a pretty torn in this category with so many great shows. The only show that really made me question my pick was "Black-ish". The ABC comedy has been incredible and could easily give "Veep" a run for the award.
Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series
“Game of Thrones”
Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture
“Hacksaw Ridge”

A lot of great stunt performances here, but war movies seems to be what captures the awards. "Doctor Strange" and "Captain America: Civil War" could very easily take this, but I feel pretty confident that we wills see this go to "Hacksaw Ridge".
Lifetime Achievement Award
Lily Tomlin

Episode 91 - LIVE from the Sundance Film Festival (Part 1)

LISTEN TO THE EPISODE ON ITUNES HERE

[NSFW WARNING: EXPLICIT CONTENT]

On today's episode, we are LIVE from the Sundance Film Festival!

This is Part 1 of our Sundance coverage, where I was joined by Jesse Knight and Christopher James as we talk about some of our Sundance experiences over the opening weekend of festivities.

Tim and Jesse on Main Street in Park City in front of the Egyptian Theater

Christopher, Tim and Jesse at The Tower Theater Sundance venue in Salt Lake.

Sundance is always such a great time. As many of you know, I spend a few months leading up to Sundance Producing shows for X96's Radio From Hell show. Jesse and I have been hanging out with Radio From Hell at the Wasatch Brew Pub the last few days and it's been incredible.

Tim on Radio From Hell's Friday Sundance show

In the episode we talked about some of the films we've been watching, some of our favorite actors and filmmakers we've had on the show and run into on the street, some of the hilarious interviews we've watched, getting stuck in the snow and so much more.

Tim and Jesse with Judd Apatow

Tim and Jesse with Michael Showalter

This was my last year producing these Sundance shows for Radio From Hell as I have a lot of projects on my plate now, and of course, making the move back to Los Angeles. I can't thank them enough for letting me produce their Sundance shows for the last 4 years. It's been a great experience!

Tim with Kerry Jackson, Bill Allred, Gina Barberi, and Richie T Steadman of Radio From Hell

Tim's car buried in the snow. It took us 40 minutes to dig it out!

Thank you to Sundance for always letting us cover the festival. It's one of our favorite times of the year and we love being a part of this great festival.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of our Sundance episodes that will release this weekend with more pictures from Sundance and our reviews of all of the films we've watched.

Enjoy the episode!

Tim's 74th Golden Globe Picks

Award Season is officially here! The red carpet is rolled out at the Beverly Hilton for tonight's 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards, hosted by Tonight Show host, Jimmy Fallon! It's become tradition at On the Mic that we put in our picks for who we think will take home the prestigious Golden Globe Award.

This year's nominees are absolutely incredible! So many amazing performances and incredible films have been nominated this year. The Golden Globes are always a little bit harder to make picks on because I never know what direction the Hollywood Foreign Press is going to go. They always seem to enjoy throwing us a curveball every year with the Globe winners, but either way, we're excited to see who takes home the awards tonight. Without further adieu, here are this year's picks.

Best Motion Picture – Drama:

“Manchester By The Sea”

Don't count out “Moonlight” just yet. While "Manchester By The Sea" seems like the lock, "Moonlight" has picked up a lot of steam over the last few weeks.

Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

“La La Land”

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama

Casey Affleck – “Manchester By The Sea”

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama

Natalie Portman – “Jackie”

Don't count out Amy Adams. The "Arrival" star gave an incredible performance this year and is always an award season favorite!

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

Ryan Gosling – “La La Land”

After Ryan Reynolds win at the Critic Choice Awards, some people think this award could very easily fall towards the Deadpool star. While I love Reynolds, I don't see it happening. However, if there is one category that I think we could see a curveball, I think we could see Colin Farrell sneak in with "The Lobster".

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

Emma Stone – “La La Land”

It's great to see Hailee Steinfeld back in award contention for "The Edge of Seventeen", but this award has Emma Stone written all over it.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture

Mahershala Ali – “Moonlight”

This was honestly one of the more difficult areas to pick. There were so many great performances nominated here. Honestly, Jeff Bridges and Dev Patel had incredible performances, but given the current push behind Moonlight and Mahershala Ali, this is where I see the award falling.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture

Viola Davis – “Fences”

Best Director – Motion Picture

Damien Chazelle – “La La Land”

This is an interesting category with Mel Gibson being in the mix. We haven't seen Mel in a while and this could be the moment to see his Hollywood will give Mel another chance. I don't see it happening. Damien Chazelle won audiences over with "Whiplash" and he's done once again with "La La Land"!

Best Original Screenplay

Damien Chazelle – “La La Land”

Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language

“Elle” – France

Best Motion Picture – Animated

“Zootopia”

Best Original Song – Motion Picture

“City Of Stars” – La La Land

Best Original Score – Motion Picture

Justin Hurwitz – “La La Land”

Best Television Series – Drama

“Game Of Thrones”

This is probably the most stacked category this year. Every show in this category has captivated audiences all year long. It was hard to pick who I felt was the one that was going to stand out among the pack. Overall, "Game of Thrones" has had the biggest impact on audiences this year.

Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy

“Atlanta”

Another categories with so many great nominees. "Atlanta" was the breakout hit of the year that everybody was rooting for. We've all missed Donald Glover on TV since his departure from "Community". Glover made an incredible show with "Atlanta" that lived up to all of the hype and excitement.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama

Rami Malek – “Mr. Robot”

After Rami Malek's Emmy win, and an incredible second season of Mr. Robot, I think we see Rami Malek finally take home the Golden Globe as well.

Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series – Drama

Claire Foy – “The Crown”

Don't be surprised if you see Evan Rachel Wood take this category for "Westworld".

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy

Donald Glover – “Atlanta”

This was another incredibly strong category, with several nominees that have previously taken home the Golden Globe. This year is Glover's year though after giving us this breakthrough hit.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy:

Issa Rae – “Insecure”

Don't count out Rachel Bloom just yet! After her surprise win last year, the star of "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" could be ready to take home her second Golden Globe.

Best Limited Series:

“The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”

Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television:

Courtney B Vance – “The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”

Courtney B. Vance was absolutely incredible as Johnny Cochran. I would be shocked if he didn't take this home.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television:

Thandie Newton – “Westworld”

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television:

Sarah Paulson – “The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television:

Sterling K Brown – “The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”

I know a lot of people believe John Lithgow will take this home for his role in "The Crown", but Sterling K. Brown was incredible in the "The People v O.J. Simpson". After his win at the Emmys and the shows success, I think he keeps his award coming in by taking home the Golden Globe.

Those are my predictions for this year! Let's see how I do. Make sure to follow me on Twitter @timdrake while I live tweet the show.

We can't wait to see what Jimmy Fallon has in store for us and who is taking home the Golden Globes.

Tune in TONIGHT on NBC!
